MUM’S FAMILY ON HER MOTHERS SIDE

THOMAS AND MARY ANN TREVETHAN 

Thomas and Mary Ann Trevethan were Elsie's great grand parents and they hail from Devon. The maiden name of her great grand mother was Howell, but details of her life are not known to us at present. Thomas Trevethan was born in 1823 and at the census of 1881 he would be 53 years of age. He was a copper miner by trade and he died at a place in Cornwall called Gunnislake. He was 71 years of age when he died on the 9th of June 1894. 
They had at least one daughter who was Elsie’s grand mother. Her name was:- 


CAROLINE ELIZA

Caroline Eliza was born on the 26th of February 1859. At the census of 1881 she would have been 22 years of age. She was born at Lower Town, Buckfastleigh in Devon, The family must have moved sometime after her birth to Gunnislake in Cornwall where her father died. She married William Hill from Welshpool and they lived there for a time before moving to Penygroes near Caernarvon. At Penygroes they had a shop selling china and pottery. William Hill was aged 23 at the time of the 1881 census. Also in the same year, they had the first of their six children. He was William Joseph aged one in 1881. Following him during the years that followed, they had five other children. The family consisted of two boys and four girls.

WILLIAM JOSEPH (Joe)

Joe, as he was known to the rest of the family, worked for a while in the shop at Penygroes. He married and had two children, a boy and a girl. The family moved to Bangor and made their abode in Caernarvon Road. 

GEORGE

George was married to Kate and lived at Kuffin Square in Bangor, near the old Football Ground but in time they moved to the West End of Bangor. They had two sons and they and their father worked at the Bangor Gas Works. 

JESSIE

Jessie was married to Jack Mellor and had two sons Jackie and Desna. Jack and the two sons worked in the Post Office Telephone Services. When the children were small, the family lived at Porthmadoc. Their house was near the present Ffestiniog Railway terminal. Elsie used to spend some of her school holiday at their home. They moved to Bangor for a while and then to Hoole in Chester. Jessie lived in Hoole behind the bank at the corner of Faulkner St.

Jackie served with distinction during the Second World War and gained the DSM serving on the Russian convoys. After the War he married Rene and after living in various places in Chester, they left and settled in Bermuda. He became a Freemason and made good progress in his work until he died of cancer a few years ago. Both of them used to visit us regularly at Barnston when they were on holiday. They had no children of their own, except for Beryl born to Rene before she met Jackie. Beryl is married with a family of two children in the USA. 

Desna married and had three children. They lived in Hoole until Desna died some years ago. I was asked to take his funeral service at Blacon. Desna’s wife Thelma suffered ill health, and after Desna’s death moved to live with one of her daughters in the Bebington Area. The other two children, John Charles and Lynn still live in the Chester area. The daughter in Bebington is called Susan. 

POLLY (Mary) 

Polly was married with two boys, named Willie and Joe. They lived in Ambrose Street, Bangor. Her husband Ned worked for the slate works in Hirael, Bangor. The name of the firm was Humphrey Williams. Polly was not her real name. She was christened Mary. Unfortunately, she was killed on the road near Maesgeirchen, Bangor. Willie's wife was called Margaret, and they lived in Ambrose Street 

AMY

Amy was married to Bill Bowen, and they lived at Maesgeirchen. Bill worked for the Penrhyn Estate Office on the quay at Bangor. They had three children. Hilda the daughter was married to Peter West and went to live in Canada. After his death, she married again and moved back to live in Coventry in the UK. Amy had two sons, Billy who lived in Beaumaris and Ken.

MARGARET

Margaret married Henry Evans and they had five children. Harry, Elsie, Joan, Enid and Albert. They first lived with their parents at Penygroes where Harry was born. Then they moved to James Street (Fountain Street?) in Bangor, then to Serial Road, and finally to Dean Street. The other four children were born in Bangor. Elise's mother Margaret was seriously ill for several months with nephritis, and the girls nursed her at home until she died on June 19th 1949 a day before her birthday. Elsie father worked at the Crosville Motor Services but after his wife's death, came to live the rest of his life with us at Barnston

MOSES AND JANE EVANS

Moses came originally from a village near Welshpool named Buttington. He and Jane Evans had nine children. Moses worked on the Railway. They lived with their family at 300 Caernarvon Road, Bangor. After working on the old Britannia Railway Bridge in a violent thunderstorm, he caught pneumonia and died. He and his wife Jane are buried just behind Elsie’s parents' grave at Glanadda Bangor. there is a small stone on the grave, and it is marked with their initials ME & JE.


TOM
 
Tom was married with two children, He was an accountant with Lever Bros. in Port Sunlight. One son worked as a Sanitary Inspector at Llanddulas, near Abergele. The other son worked somewhere in Manchester 

BILL 

Bill was a butler at Treborth Hall, which was situated on the Caernarvonshire side of the Menai Straits between the two bridges, and where there is now a Caravan Park. His first wife died rather young and he married a second time to Rose. There were no children from either marriage

JIM

Jim was a publican by trade and lived in a number of places. He was married and had two daughters, Beryl and Vera. They looked after pubs in Caernarvon, Amlwch in Anglesey, and Dinas Dinlle.

MOSES

Moses lived most of his life in Bromborough Pool. When I first met him, he was a widower and had worked most of his life at the Candle Works in Port Sunlight. 

JACK

Jack was married to Lil and had a son called Arthur, who also worked for Lever Bros. When we lived at Barnston, Arthur used to come to church quite regularly with his aunt. 
Jack and Lil had another son who died young. Jack and Arthur worked at Port Sunlight and lived at Bromborough Pool. Jack was quite a good painter and Lil was a very good dress maker.

HENRY

Henry was married to Margaret Hill and had five children. He originally worked on the Railway, then with the buses. He first worked for the old Bangor Blue buses and then with the Crosville Motor Services where he finished his working days. He served with the Denbighshire Hussars, a cavalry Regt. during the first World War and saw service in France. He used to joke that Elsie's second name Marie was after a horse he knew in the Army!!! He ended his days with us at Barnston and died at Clatterbridge Hospital on Dec. 31st 1969. He is buried at Glanadda Cemetery in Bangor. For us it seemed that we were taking him home where he had been brought up and near St. David’s Church, where he had sung in the choir as a boy.

MAGGIE
 
Maggie never married . She was in service for most of her life.She worked in Bromborough at one time and we used to see her quite often in those days, She visited us very often at Barnston. l was an executor of her Will. 

JENNY

Jenny was married and lived in Runcorn. She used to come and stay with us when we were at Handbridge. She had one son called Douglas. His one passion was playing whist and she loved to go to the parish whist drive. She had an unfortunate end she died of cancer.

POLLY

Polly was married and lived at Bromborough. She had one son who worked at the Bromborough Cemetery.
